Here’s what happens:

A soda can is borrowed. The tab is pulled off and clearly placed on the bottom of the can. You cover both ends and shake. Everyone hears the tab rattle against the aluminum. When you lift your hands, the tab is gone. It has penetrated the can and is now inside.

Then you proceed to break one of the cardinal rules of magic. You repeat the trick again. The tab goes on the bottom of the can, you shake it, and it penetrates the can.

For the final phase, you repeat the trick for a third time, except this time, it all happens in the participants’ hands. They hold the can, they cover it with their hands, they shake it, everyone hears it, and the tab penetrates the can again! They can even remove the tab from inside of the can themselves!
